Who is ILL Camp? RIGID, SLAM, Main Man, Walt Mass, Kompleet Trackz, Nasty Knowledge, Loose Cannon, DJ Serious, Avalanche and P.

Who does what? We all write our own music. RIGID produces and emcees, Kompleet Tracks is our second-in-command producer and DJ Serious is the hype man that keeps us ready to rip the booth or the stage... Serious was also the DJ at The Chatterbox (Good Time Charlie's) a few years ago.

Describe your style: Our style is simply official hip-hop music, we don't follow gimmicks or mimic anyone else. Sure, we've been influenced by other artists, but we stay true to ourselves and our music reflects originality and love for the art and craft. We know why we do this and it's not for fame. We do this because we love hip-hop. It's obvious that a lot of other artists don't respect the music because if they did, they wouldn't lie to people through their songs and promote false images.

What's the history of ILL Camp? ILL Camp was formed in 2000 by RIGID, SLAM, Loose Cannon, and DJ Serious. RIGID bought a Playstation game that enabled him to produce beats and from there it was pretty much on (laughs). We would rhyme to the instrumentals he'd made until we had tapes after tapes completed.

The name "ILL Camp" came about in early 2001... we knew we wanted a name that meant something, so at first we threw a couple of ideas out there, but none really hit it off. So one day we're just chilling and "ILL Camp" came up because "ILL" means something is hot, or sounds good, and we felt we had the sound. "Camp" just came because we are a group and in it together for the same purpose: to make good music. It could also be interpreted as a group of individuals that are sick or ill because of the turn that hip-hop took.

Are you working on any new material? Yeah, Walt Mass is working on his second album "Soul to Soul", Main Man is wrapping up his new album "Hand Over Fist", and RIGID is about to start on his new album. We're all getting ready to begin on the ILL Camp album next year. All should be available in 2009. Updates are posted on the ILL Camp blog.

Where do you perform? We've had shows in Charlotte, NC and at the American Legion in Lancaster, SC (where we're all from)... Main Man will be performing at Winthrop University on 1/26/09 at an event hosted by Tone X from Power 98. We perform often at Carolina Steak & Ribs (the former Lancaster Tavern); our next show there is 12/26/08.
